Lockdown sceptic Mike Yeadon: Fact checked

Ex-Pfizer scientist turned lockdown sceptic Mike Yeadon appears in a video liked thousands of times on social media telling mistruths about the pandemic.

He first claims: “You don’t need masks, they don’t work.”

Masks do work. Masks have been shown in various studies to reduce the transmission of viral particles. Links to these studies are included in our article, which you can find at the top of this description.

It may be the case that respirators work better than surgical masks, but surgical masks are still beneficial. There is a reason why they are used and have been used for decades in healthcare settings.

Mr Yeadon then says: “Forget lockdowns, they never slow transmission which took place mostly in institutions like hospitals and care homes.”

The effect of lockdowns on reducing transmission has been covered by various scientific papers. Links to these papers are included in our article, which you can find at the top of this description.

Theoretically, you would expect lockdowns, which limit the interaction of humans, to slow the spread of a disease which is spread by person-to-person contact.

Circumstantial evidence also points to this conclusion. In England, there have been three lockdowns, in March 2020, in November 2020 and in January 2021. In each case, following the introduction of lockdown measures, cases and deaths which had been rising, then fell.

It is worth noting that Mr Yeadon’s previous explanation for why cases and deaths fell in the spring of 2021 was that herd immunity had been reached which was evidently not true as tens of thousands of excess deaths were recorded over winter.

As for the claim that transmission mainly happened in institutions, there isn’t enough evidence to say this. Some studies point to contact within households being responsible for the majority of infections.

We’ve written before on how it’s hard to know whether cases of Covid-19 in hospitals are actually due to hospital transmission.

Mr Yeadon then says: “You don’t need to be vaccinated by inadequately tested and somewhat dangerous gene-based spike protein-inducing proteins [sic].”

Three Covid-19 vaccines have been approved by the UK regulator for use at the time of writing: the Moderna vaccine, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, and the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Multiple stages of trials have proved that these three vaccines are safe and effective. Although a possible link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and an incredibly rare kind of blood clot is still being investigated, the benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the risks for most people.

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines both use mRNA “gene” technology which, once inside the body, provides the instructions on how to produce spike proteins like those found on the surface of the Covid-19 virus, prompting the body to generate antibodies. This is not dangerous.

Michael Yeadon, a former employee of Pfizer, said that the government rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine is an attempt at “mass depopulation” with booster recipients expected to die within two years.

  1. I could reply belligerently. You’ve come to aoc’s post. Get your mind right.

      1. How about a surgeon and a dentist and a dental hygienist?

I gave a practical reason for masks. Other reasons are 1) tradition, 2) hospital policy, and 3) training. Impractical reasons. ;)

I just completed a post about mask effectiveness for stopping antiviral transmission based on physics principles, where I am in field.

      2. Neil Orr, 1981…masks don’t reduce surgical wound infections when worn in the operating theater…I posted the link in another comment, so maybe you can approve that comment?

      3. “Face masks are worn by all operating room personnel when treating patients susceptible to infections as in neurosurgery, vascular, and orthopedic procedures involving implants and regional anesthesia procedures (e.g. , spinal or epidural). Face masks are also used to protect staff from contamination. All personnel wear face masks when taking care of trauma patients or patients with blood-borne infections.”

      4. Not to prevent surgical wound infections except in particular cases, such as the immune compromised or immune suppressed. Mostly to protect the staff from patient body fluids.

But also mandated by hospitals which hadn’t kept up with science.

None of this means that masks were worn to protect patients from doctors.

      5. As mentioned to your previous comment, my response was an agreement with you: ——“Yes, and, was protocol before COVID.”

Now another strange comment recently came in. It was very abrupt and controversial. I apologize if there is a mixup with the conversations out of sync.🤔

      6. Very good. Thank you.

May I suggest that you have a look at my post on my blog about the FDA/CDC not computing wrt what they say. I’d very much like to know if my post is confusing. Thanks.

      7. Your post are not confusing. You’ve stated your professional perspective with supported facts. Sometimes other comments get glitched onto another comment reply. It happens all the time —-a person was referring to another comment. You are welcome the covid pilot.

    1. I don’t think so, but we’ll have to research. Thus far, it’s for doctors and nurses when they’re operating on a patient, to present their germs and droplets from entering the patient whose body is cut open.

  2. Nah, the evidence doesn’t show that masks work to stop viruses, except for self-contained breathing apparatus. It’s a physics question and physicists are still researching.

    1. We have a lot of COVID info to share with you. Struggling thru the misinformation and disinformation weighs heavy. The executive branch of government 97% of the time, do not wear masks at their social functions. Suspicious.

    2. All too many haven’t been taught simple science while growing up. As adults, they don’t know how viruses, so small, walk through masks, certainly around gaps, yet the CDC never issued “their” masks, which indicate they never were serious other than a distraction and marker [and what can we say about those plastic visors?], and what studies have been done regarding wearing masks, breathing your own air, and as regards to various medical conditions. A friend just tells store owners he has asthma, so they leave him alone. Then, the question begs the reasons. Yes, doctors wear them, but they know they’re designed, we believe, more when they open a body that they don’t “breathe” their germs into the patient.
